WHO WAS RUBY LEE MINAR?

Ruby Lee Minar was a member of the Washington D.C. Soroptimist Club and became the first Federation President of the Soroptimist International of the Americas in 1928.  She took office at the Philadelphia Convention held in July, 1930.  She was the first editor of the Soroptimist International Magazine in 1928 called "The Bulletin".  After she retired and moved to the Miami area, she transferred her membership to the Miami Springs - Hialeah Club.  In 1952, she died at sea on her way to the Soroptimist International Convention in Copenhagen, Denmark.

She was the inspiration and guiding light of the five Soroptimist Clubs who started Southern Region in 1946.  (Miami, Palm Beach, St Petersburg, Miami Springs- Hialeah and Ft. Lauderdale).  The Region Project fund was renamed the Ruby Lee Minay Memorial Scholarship Fund in 1953.

WHAT IS THE LOAN?

The fund provides loans , interest free, not to exceed $3500 per recipient, to qualified  candidates for graduate study in the field of their choice.  Loans shall be made for tuition, but at the discretion of The Board of Directors, may be used to include books and necessary equipment.  Proceeds of the loan are to be paid to the educational institution of the recipient's choice following completion of the loan process.

  Applicants' legal residences shall be within the territorial limits of Southern Region, but they may attend schools elsewhere.

The Board of Directors will thoroughly review all loan applications, giving consideration to the following points in order of preference as indicated:
    A. Scholarship and educational background
    B. Need
    C. General Character
    D. Credit Worthiness of co-signers
    E. Any other point bearing on the general qualifications of the applicant.

Loans made to candidates shall be protected by life insurance purchased on the life of each borrower to secure the amount loaned.  Annual premiums paid for such life  insurance are to be added to the principal balance of the loan amount.  The Treasurer shall purchase the life insurance policy and the loan amount shall not be released until evidence of life insurance is received.   When such loan is repaid,  the Board of Directors shall give each insured the opportunity to continue the policy on their life.

In the past, contributions were received from individual members, clubs and a portion of Regional dues were set aside for the fund.  In 1998, the RLM Memorial Fund, Inc. was selected as the Southern Region's Service Project.  T

The fund currently stands at $18,468.45 which includes $400 raised from the baskets at Regional confernece and $100 in donations.
