LEADERSHIP TRAINING REPORT

DISTRICT II MEETING

Friday, October 6, 2006

Governor Connie announced that District Director II Ceil Champion had resigned her position in July. After working with the nomination committee from District III, it became apparent that no one wanted the position. During the interim Board meeting, the Board decided to appoint District Director IV Caroline Feagley as Director of both District III and District IV.

Remember: Women’s Opportunity Award Program is the signature program of Soroptimist. The Governor’s goal is to have 100% participation in the region this biennium.

SIA is heading up the "Three Wishes" Campaign. This campaign addresses all three major areas of Soroptimism: international, federation and club levels. International: Project Independence and/or December 10th appeal

Federation: Founders’ Pennies

Club: Club Campaign – this program helps Soroptimists first

Governor Connie Desko then made a wonderful presentation on Qualities of a Leader," She listed the following criteria for being a good leader:

Who you are on the inside makes you a leader on the outside

• Character – do not deny your own convictions

• Charisma – Making others feel better about themselves, spirit of approval, give people hope

• Commitment – keep your eye on the goal

• Communication – is key to any organization

• Competence – keep learning and growing

• Courage – be as good as our private person; stand up for what you believe in; doing what you are afraid to do

• Discernment – use wise discretion; only believe 1/2 of what you hear; check out what was said

• Focus – on what you are doing; ask for help

• Generosity – time and talents, not just money

• Initiative – keeps you moving – even through the mistakes

• Listening – we’ve got to grow by asking: ‘What is it we need?’ Follow up! ‘Why is someone unhappy?’

• Passion – love what you do – you are part of a bigger picture. Be infected – with passion!

• Positive Attitude

• Problem Solving – don’t give up on your major goal, find out what the problem is and look for the big picture

• Relationships – try not to be too emotional; when confronted turn the tables and ask "what have you done to help a woman today?"

• Responsibility – leader has final responsibility; become better at what you do

• Security – make others feel good about themselves, say thank you, compliment them

• Self Discipline – stay focused on the results, get rid of excuses

• Servant hood – Put others ahead of yourself

• Teach (ability to) – keep learning, try something new; learn in your area of strength; share your knowledge with others

• Vision – attract, challenge, and unite people

Minutes of the Membership Meeting of  Sept 27, 2006
Soroptimist International of Upper Pinellas County
General Membership Meeting

Perkins Restaurant, Gulf-to-Bay & US Hwy. 10, Clearwater
5:30 to 7:00 p.m. – social and dinner

At 7:00 p.m., President Paula called the meeting to order and Martha offered the invocation.

During dinner the brag bucket was passed and collected $137.00 ($12. of which was used to pay for our guest speaker’s - Lara Shane - dinner)

President Paula introduced our guest speaker, Sara Shane, from Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Pinellas County.  Sara shared some very interesting statistics with us – one being that over 17,000 children in Pinellas County are being raised by persons other than their parents or step parents and that 40% of Pinellas County children are considered “at risk”.  Their funding is mostly from donations such as the JWB, United Way and corporate grants.  They are the only non-profit to have an outside agency to measure their success.  Lara left some brochures and invited us to participate in the program with time or money – or both.

MINUTES of the July 25, 2006 meeting were accepted as published.

 TREASURER’S REPORT:

  1. In our treasurer's absence, Paula handed out the July and August 2006 reports.  There were no questions on either report so they will be filed for audit.
  2. Budget for 2006-07 was presented for review.  There was a motion made and seconded to accept the budget.  This motion passed.
  3. Audit Report was presented and will be filed.

 COMMUNICATIONS/CORRESPONDENCE:

  1. Letter from Clearwater Library regarding use of the room for our meetings (we have called to let them know we no longer need this meeting space.)
  2. SI Homestead reminding us of Southern Conference – May 4-6, 2007
  3. Several miscellaneous solicitation letters
  4. Tampa Bay Forum advertising their “PINK OUT NIGHT” set for October 9.  Proceeds to Moffet Cancer Center.  (See Paula if interested in attending)
  5. Center for Women’s Ministries advertising their “Evening of Desserts” set for September 28 (See Paula if interested in attending)
  6. Newsletters from SI Tampa, Homeless Emergency Project and Women on the Way.  The Women on the Way newsletter prompted discussion on their continuous lack of acknowledgement  in their newsletter of our contributions.  President Paula will contact Sharon Coil prior to our October meeting and see how this can be corrected.  We are presenting a check to Sharon in October.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

  1. Southern Region Conference 2008 – President Paula handed out a brief outline of responsibilities as a hosting club.  After much discussion, it was decided that Paula would contact Gov. Connie to get a copy of the budget of either (or both) 2005 and 2006 conferences and we will hopefully get a chance to visit with SI Tampa at the District II Meeting next week to get their input on the project.   We will be prepared at the October membership meeting to vote to-or-against hosting the 2008 Southern Region Conference.
  2. By-Laws Amendment - Pat explained that we are not in compliance with regard to our “rotating” delegates.  She published the proposed amendment to Article IV that the delegates must be named, have an email address and that these would be one year terms.  A motion was made and seconded.  The motion passed.
  3. Election of Delegates – President Paula opened the floor for nominations of two delegates.  Martha Gray and Karen Curry were nominated.  It was made, seconded and passed to close the nominations.  Motion passed.  Congratulations to Martha and Karen on their election.  They will represent SI of Upper Pinellas well.
  4. Westfield Works status – as presented by Karen and confirmed by Paula, Westfield is NOT hosting this project this year.  However, both Karen and Paula were told that there would be some other event and they would be in touch in the near future.  Karen stated that they are very bad about contacting people so she will keep in touch with them.
  5. Women Honoring Women – Clearwater Country Club has been reserved for Saturday, March 10, 2007.  Nominating forms are in the SCOUP as a link.  Susan will send several to each member who does not have computer access.  Let’s get those nominations sent in.  Deadline is December 1, 2006.
  6. By-Laws presentation – Pat will publish in the October SCOUP the few housekeeping items that need to be done to update our By-Laws, i.e. boundaries for WOA and Violet Richardson, dues changes, and any other like items.  Pat will also check with SIA to make sure everything is in full compliance.
  7. Career Night – January 2007 – After several inquiries received by Paula from women interested in being invited to “a membership event”, it was decided that perhaps a Career Night event is in order.  Martha, Karen, Terry Sue and Betsi will meet to discuss and make a presentation at the October meeting.
  8. Dinner Arrival Time at Perkins – it was suggested that in order to stay on time and not have the waiters interrupt our meeting, that everyone arrive in time to ORDER dinner by 6:00 p.m.  This would give us time to eat and have dishes cleared away before starting our meeting at 7:00 p.m.  Please do your best … of course, if you want to come early, you are certainly welcome.

 ANNOUNCEMENTS:    None.

President Paula adjourned the meeting at 8:45 p.m. with the Soroptimist Pledge.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Kinney-Lowell

Contribute through GoodSearch
GoodSearch is a Yahoo-powered search engine that donates 50 percent of its advertising revenue (about a penny per search) to the user's favorite charity. Ours, of course, is SIA. The pennies add up quickly. Consider that if only 1,000 members, friends and staff search the Internet just twice a day, Soroptimist could earn $7,300 a year - just for doing something we do every day!  If we think bigger, for example, 10,000 users searching twice a day will earn Soroptimist $73,000 a year!
All you have to do is visit www.goodsearch.com and download the GoodSearch toolbar. Enter 'Soroptimist' in the 'My Charity' field and then every time you search the net on your computer, don't forget to use GoodSearch!
Thank you for using GoodSearch to help Soroptimist fund our programs that improve the lives for women and girls. Let's see how much we can get those pennies to add up!
Note from Pat:  This is not Yahoo's standard bar.
Live Your Dreams
"Live Your Dreams" pins are available at our club for sale at $3 each which is our cost.  There is more information on "Live Your Dreams" below and at the bottom of the page.
The following information is from the Soroptimists International of America Webstie.  To read more info, Just click here..
" Despite much progress during the last century, women and girls throughout the world continue to face serious challenges. While they represent about one-half of the world's population, women suffer disproportionately from many social problems. Approximately 70 percent of the 1.3 billion people who live on $1 a day are women. More women between the ages of 15 and 44 die due to gender-based violence than cancer, malaria, car accidents and war combined. About 90 million girls around the world are deprived of primary education. These are but a few statistics illuminating the obstacles facing women and girls around the world. Soroptimist created the Live Your Dream campaign to raise awareness about these challenges and inspire women from all walks of life to realize their full potential.
